Seventeenth Sunday

Our Father

Many of our Catholic Saints spent their entire lives meditation and praying only on the Lord’s prayer, sometimes spending Months and Years only of the phrase: OUR FATHER. Let us realise that as we pray God is actually listening to us. Perhaps it would go something like this.

psalm69_30

1.      OUR FATHER...

Hey, wait a minute, are you calling me?

Who are you? Well, you called me just now, did you not? You said, Our Father.

Do you really mean, Our Father.

Yes, Lord, I do.  Everybody? The Chinese and the Hindus, the Africans and the Muslims. Then why do you have prejudices against certain groups. Why do you crack ethnic jokes again the Chinese? And why do you racially profile the Africans - they are my children you know.

Hindus are one of my favourites. They are so peaceful. They have that beautiful prayer - the gift that my son, Jesus gave to you Christians: Peace. They say Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.

That’s Sanskrit, Lord.

Yes I know. I do understand all the languages. I receive your prayers whether you say:

Ama Namin, sumasit langit ka. Or :

Padre Nuestro qui estas en cielo.

2.      And then there are my Muslim children. They are so faithful to prayer. They talk to me five times a day. You know when you love someone you want to talk to them always. They talk to me five times a day... Monday night football, and Saturday night Hockey does not get in the way. Don’t confuse my Muslim children with some fanatical terrorists.

And I say, May I continue Lord?

3.      Ok, you may. Our Father. Do you believe I am your Father and that I care for you?

You are one of the Lucky ones. Your Dad was a good dad. I love you so I left him with you for 93 years of his life.

Some other of my children were not so lucky. Their dads did not show my image to their children.

         Some were drunks,

some physically and sexually abused their children,

some just did not have the courage to be fathers and ran away.

The mothers had to be single parents. And they had to be fathers and mothers to their children. I have a special place in my heart for these mothers. Hey, come to think of it, they are like me. Since I am a Spirit, there is no male or female. I’m both mother and father to all of you. And the Single Parent Mothers are just like that. They have to be mothers and fathers to their children. They have to Love and Discipline their children. They have to hear their children say: I love in one breathe, and I hate you in the next.

4.

And then there were some fathers that died in the war,

others died in the line of duty as firemen and policemen.

These were good men, but never got a chance to be fathers to their children because they died in the line of duty. Tell these children I cared for them. I could have prevented the deaths of their fathers. But I gave you all the free will and once you made a choice, I would not take the free will even if it going in the wrong direction.

Lord may I go on with the Our Father?

5.      Our Father who art in heaven. Hey, wait a minute, do you believe in heaven.

Of course Lord, I believe in Heaven, why else would I pray so much.

Ah, you seem to talk very much like the People of Israel in the time of my prophet Isaiah. They thought they could control me with

         their fasts

         their keeping of the Sabbath

         their long prayers.

Today you still

         say long prayers

         light candles

         say the rosary

         say the Divine Mercy Novena.

These are all good. But they cannot buy heaven. Heaven is my free gift to you. It is always there. The only way you will not go to heaven, is if you choose not to come here. I have an open house - I invite you into a relationship - just like the People of Israel. I want you to be my people, and I promise to be your God.

5b      It is not a popular idea these days: Heaven and Hell.

People are willing to believe in Heaven and do not mind coming here. But psychologists think Hell is an unhealthy and non productive way of looking at life. I have given you a free will and you bear the consequences of your choice. I am always saying, Acome back to me with all your heart. No matter how many times you sin, I forgive. You have limited patience with your failures. I have the whole of eternity... and I want you to be here with me in heaven.

Our Father who are in Heaven. Lord I would like to continue, but this is a mass on TV and our time is up.

Don’t worry says the Father... I will be here again tomorrow. Same time same place.
