THROW THE NET ONE MORE TIME.
This reflection is based on the encounter of Jesus with Simon Peter and the other fishermen. These men had gone
for fishing and had fished all night. They were experts and professionals. They had the skills and techniques of catching fishes. They labored through the night but their attempt at success came to nothing.
This was not the first day they were fishing. They were used to fishing. They
knew the particular places that you could find fishes in the river.
It was now early morning and they were washing their nets preparing to go
home. I imagine their state of mind as they were preparing their net to go home. They must have seen themselves in a state of disappointment. To
have labored hard all night and caught nothing was very frustrating. Think of the economic loss. They have to pay the workers with them though they caught nothing.
Think about your own life. When you have made all attempts and yet all your
efforts seem to take you nowhere. You have tried and tried and tried. You become filled with sadness and even at times despair. You want to be left
alone and not to be disturbed. You are worried over your failures. You become anxious over the coming days.
These men in the gospels must have been washing their nets in a state of
disappointment ready to go home when Jesus came into their lives. Jesus asked Peter to give him his boat for a moment, to use it to preach. He even
asked Peter to row the boat a short distance from the shore. If it were you, what will you do? When you are thinking about how you have put in all your
efforts yet there is no reward, will you like somebody to come and ask you for your help?
Though Peter had his own difficulties to grapple with yet he helps Jesus with
his boat. At the end of the story he catches more fishes than he perhaps had caught through his life. What you make happen for others God will make
happen for you. The good you do in adversity will bring you more reward than the good you do when things are well for you.
They have tried throughout the night without succeeding yet when Jesus
comes, he tells them to try one more time. They could have refused and complained. But they tried one more time.
Do not be fast to give up because you have failed. Never, never, give up.
One more attempt will not destroy you but could bring you to success. Even when you fail continue to try. Many great things in life came out of failure. No
good thing is ever achieved easily. Do not be discouraged.
Keep trying, if you do not succeed today, you may succeed tomorrow. There
is always a hidden exit nearby. The rainbow is always hidden behind the cloud. If you look well you may see the opportunities which others are not seeing. A bit of wisdom from somebody else can bring about your
breakthrough. Be willing to accept help from others even strangers. You do not know all things. In your tiredness and exhaustion you may have forgotten
the right place to throw the net. Before giving up throw the net one more time. Throw it two more times and even many more times.
